September is Associate Appreciation Month

We're back from summer recess and I love this time of the year. Summer days culminate into one big party weekend called Labor Day Weekend. The time to celebrate working Americans. In the case of our association we have a great group of members who are hard working members and I asked Granger MacDonald, a Kerrville, Texas-based builder and developer with 40 years of experience in the home building industry, to give his thoughts on our associate members and he happily obliged.

Granger is NAHB’s 2017 Chairman of the Board of Directors and if you know Granger you know he says what he means and means what he says!

Associates Members are the Backbone of the NAHB Federation.

Granger MacDonald
NAHB’s associate members offer their time and expertise at the local, state and national levels, often assuming leadership roles within the federation. They work alongside builders to help foster a pro-housing political environment through grassroots activism, and they help broaden the scope and impact of our advocacy efforts through the networks within their specialty fields. Their insights and perspectives shape federation policy.

For these reasons and many more, NAHB sets aside September as Associate Member Appreciation Month.

Associates make up roughly two-thirds of NAHB’s membership and represent a wide range of avocations. They include skilled subcontractors, sales and marketing experts, architects, interior designers, title and settlement professionals, lawyers, engineers, people working in financial services and insurance, product suppliers and manufacturers — and many other professions.

These professionals are just as vital to the process of building homes as the folks who use a nail gun on the job site.

Associate members are also critical to our local and state home builder associations. They fill leadership positions, serve on committees, and get the job done on everything from golf tournaments to the parade of homes.

Another reason associates are the epoxy that holds the federation together: associates are committed to doing business with other members. This strengthens professional bonds within the local HBA and across the federation.

Our associates are represented by a National Associate Chairman who joins NAHB’s 15 Area Chairmen as part of the federation’s leadership. In addition, the Associate Members Committee represents associates’ interests at the national level.

NAHB also has several award programs to recognize the importance of associate member involvement in the federation. We recognize an Associate of the Year, as well as a builder or local entity that best exemplifies the motto, “It’s good business to do business with a member” through the BEAM (Builders Engaging Associate Members) Award. We also honor the most outstanding Associate member advocate through our Bill Polley BUILD-PAC Award.
Please note: If you would like to nominate an individual or entity for any of these awards, please do so soon. The application deadline is Sept. 27.

Associates are full partners in the essential work of creating the homes that are the cornerstone of American family life. Our association, our industry and our nation are stronger because of our associate members. Together, we build homes and shape the future.
